Description

Cumberland Council is a new and innovative unitary authority with a 4,000 plus strong workforce and an ambition to be a leading council that does things differently. Formed in April 2023 following a local government reorganisation, we are off to a great start and are looking for an aspirational leader in HR and OD to continue to drive us on our organisation’s journey.

Without question, this is one of the most exciting Local Government opportunities in HR & OD practice. As a new leader in a new authority, you will have a unique opportunity to shape our culture, workforce development, reward, engagement, organisation design and operational HR delivery.

Reporting to the Director of Business Transformation and Change, you will be a key member of Cumberland’s leadership team and contribute to the direction of Cumberland Council; helping to shape and develop a high performing, efficient, entrepreneurial, compassionate and enabling organisation.

A key project will include embedding the new HR & OD service and delivering an inspirational HR & OD Strategy that sets out our approach and commitment to enable the delivery of innovative services, embodying our values and ensuring health and wellbeing are at the heart at everything we do.

Who we’re looking for:

We’re looking for a strong people professional, with an impressive operational and strategic background. You will have the confidence to play a full role in the Council’s leadership team and bring experience of delivering a successful HR & OD service. The ideal candidate will lead with clarity, have an inclusive approach and be skilled at driving change, inspiring, empowering and upskilling colleagues. You’ll be confident at managing people-related risks, influencing and providing strategic advice to elected members, leading culture change, nurturing employee engagement, and working collaboratively and positively with Trade Unions.
